Prominent Armenian Statesman Levon Sahakyan Passes Away at 89
Levon Gurgenovich Sahakyan, a distinguished public and political figure, has passed away in Moscow at the age of 89. He made significant contributions to the development of Armenia, holding several key state positions, including Chairman of the Council of Trade Unions of the Armenian SSR, First Secretary of the Yerevan City Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia, and First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Republic. Levon Sahakyan also served as a deputy to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR.
A pivotal chapter in his life was his leadership following the catastrophic Spitak earthquake. From the very first days of the tragedy, Levon Sahakyan headed the republican headquarters for rescue operations and the reconstruction of destroyed cities, coordinating the complex recovery efforts in the disaster zone.
Colleagues and loved ones will remember Levon Sahakyan as a man of exceptional dignity and great spirit, who always helped those in need and possessed a unique ability to unite people around a common cause. For his family—his wife, daughter, son, and grandchildren—he was always a wise mentor and a most beloved figure. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew, respected, and loved him.
The memorial service will be held on March 30, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, at the Armenian section of the Vagankovo Cemetery in Moscow (Address: Sergey Makeev Street 10, Building 4).
